Although it is relatively cheap to purchase this chemical as a part of a public drinking water system, there are some significant disadvantages to this method of treatment. The most significant of these disadvantages is that it is highly corrosive and can easily damage pipes, joints, and fittings, and the formation of scale deposits on pipes is quite often seen in these areas after years of use.
