Initiatives to Boost Internet Access Propels Manufacture and Launch of Small Satellites
A small satellite typically weighs under 250 kg and generally under a meter in diameter. While most such satellites are classified as "micro", other classifications are also used to classify them depending on size. The satellites are generally launched into space by the use of rocket systems. Several countries are focused on launching record number of satellites. According to the Indian government, Indian Space Research Organization earned US$ 138 million during the last five years launching satellites from 26 countries that included the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Singapore, The Netherlands, Japan, Malaysia, Algeria and France.
Although some satellites are also put into space by the use of the space shuttle system, the majority of them are launched by rockets. Many of the small satellites that are launched into space are used for communications purposes. For instance, in May 2019, SpaceX launched the first 60 operational satellites of its network of satellites called Starlink that is tasked to provide satellite Internet access.
Some of these satellites are made of plastic and metals and are quite fragile, while some of them are made of metal and are made to withstand the effects of weather and gravity. Another type of small satellites that are very popular in many space agencies across the world are the ones that are used for weather monitoring. They are very small in size and the main mission of these small satellites is to monitor the weather around Earth. In this way, they will be able to determine what kind of weather the planet is going through and in which areas and cities the weather is going to be affected. The weather satellites are especially important because they help determine the direction of the wind and help determine the direction and intensity of storms. They also monitor the changing weather patterns around the world.
Some satellites are launched to study the solar surface. For instance, European Space Agency is set to launch PROBA-3, a microsatellite mission that will study solar coronagraphy, in 2021. The other type of small satellite is the Galileo satellite which is used for navigation purposes. This is one of the oldest and also the smallest satellites that are used for navigation purposes. These satellites also help to make sure that all the satellites in the sky will be able to communicate with each other and help the navigation systems that are installed on ships.
