The U.S. is Witnessing Expansion in Manufacturing Capabilities and Capacity of Pharmaceutical Excipients

Pharmaceutical excipients are substances that are added to an active ingredient to make it more effective, safe or less toxic for use in a specific product. This list includes inert substances, additives, inactive ingredients and preservatives. These excipients are used to enhance the properties of pharmaceutical products by providing benefits in different ways. They help increase absorption of active ingredients, improve the solubility of active ingredients, provide ease in application, enhance the stability of active ingredients, provide protection from environmental factors and provide safety features.

Some examples of commonly used excipients are glycolic acid, sodium saccharin, tricalcium phosphate, carboxybenzene, linalool and Linalyl acetate. Pharmaceutical excipients are used in cosmetics for moisturizing skin, as preservatives in cosmetics and also in deodorants and fragrances. They are also used as ingredients in antibacterial disinfectants, antibacterial agents and antibiotics. They are used as preservatives for vaccines, preservatives for some foods, antioxidants for some beverages and in some medications.

Pharmaceutical excipients may be added to food supplements, shampoos and bath products for their effect on absorption of nutrients. They may also be added to coffee, tea and cocoa for their antioxidant and flavonoid activity. The other types of pharmaceutical excipients are ingredients like lubricants, emulsifiers and additives that improve the stability and solubility of an active ingredient. Examples of these ingredients are emollients, surfactants, lubricants and emollients, preservatives and antioxidants. Examples of surfactants are glycerol monostearate and sorbitol, and examples of lubricants include lanolin and polyvinyl alcohol. Another type of pharmaceutical excipient is that which is used in cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentists use it to increase the hardness and strength of teeth and gums, and in the treatment of cavities. It is also used in the treatment of abscesses, as a preservative in lip balm and as an abrasive agent.

Major manufacturers of pharmaceutical excipients include, BASF SE, Evonik Industries AG, The Lubrizol Corporation, Archer Daniels Midland Company, DuPont, and MilliporeSigma. The U.S. is witnessing expansion of manufacturing capabilities and capacity. For instance, in September 2020, MilliporeSigma announced a US$ 65 million expansion of its HPAPI and ADC manufacturing capabilities and capacity at its facility near Madison, Wisconsin.
