Advancement in Flea and Tick Products is Helping Pet Owners to prevent their Pets from Allergic Reactions

Ticks and fleas are one of the most common problems with pet animals, especially dogs. The soft, warm fur of dogs and cat is the perfect environment for fleas and ticks. These insects feed on the pet’s blood and can cause major health problems including allergic reactions and tick-borne illnesses. Flea and tick products are applied between the pet’s shoulders that kill fleas and ticks as well as repel them. There are two ways that these medications are administered namely oral treatments and topical treatments.

Oral treatment refers to the administration of medications via pills or chewable that are ingested by the pet rather than applied to its body. There are different active chemicals used in different flea and tick pill medications with some of them lasting from a few days to a month. Some of the common active chemicals include lufenuron, spinosad, and nitepyram. The lufenuron does not kill adult fleas, instead, it destroys any larvae produced by these fleas. These drugs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Furthermore, the topical treatment also referred to as spot-on medications, is applied between the pet’s shoulders. These products usually last for a month and pets cannot lick it off. Some topical flea and tick products are designed to kill as well as repel ticks and fleas.

In the recent past, there have been complaints from pet owners regarding these products saying these medications don’t work. However, veterinarians have advised using these products as advised. Key players in the U.S., Italy, and the U.K. are focused on developing novel flea and tick products so as to help pet owners. These new products are available in different forms including shampoo and spray for cats and dogs that can meet the best needs of customers.
