Cancer accounted for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018 creating a high demand for oncology drugs

 


 

Cancer drugs are used extensively in both clinical and experimental settings to treat cancers and to slow or prevent further progression of malignant tumors. 


When it comes to Oncology drugs, they can either be prescribed by physicians or purchased over-the-counter in drugstores. Because of the risks of chemotherapy, many people are choosing to treat their cancers with alternative treatments, including Oncology drugs, which are less risky and less expensive. The 3 major disease areas that contribute most of the oncology drug spending came as follows: multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and prostate cancer. Oncology is often very costly and is typically reserved for patients with life-threatening cancers. Most of the oncology drugs available are used to treat prostate and breast cancers, though there are several types of cancer that can benefit from Oncology drugs. The side effects of Oncology drugs are known to cause vomiting, hair loss, nausea, stomach aches, constipation, and loss of appetite. These problems are more common than people realize and often lead to severe problems such as malnutrition and even dehydration. 


These drugs are designed to target tumors, but oncology medications also come in different forms. Some drugs are applied directly to tumors, such as chemotherapy and radiation, and others are applied to other parts of the body, such as immunotherapy. Moreover, they are used to boost immune function, relieve pain and swelling from rheumatoid arthritis, or treat bladder and kidney diseases of the urinary tract.


The United States has a high prevalence rate of cancers which is encouraging the government to spend on cancer treatment. National expenditures associated with cancer have been steadily increasing in the United States. In the US in 2017, estimated cancer healthcare spending was US$161.2 billion
