Cut flowers are flowers or flower buds that have been cut from the plant for decorative purposes. Cut flowers have applications in home decoration, office decoration, and event decoration such as birthdays, weddings, etc. Cut flower packaging guarantees the fresh quality of flowers with a long vase life as well as keep cut flowers fresh and lively throughout the supply chain. Cut flowers need to be packaged in an appropriate format to maintain their freshness. Moreover, it protects the flowers from damage and maintains color and fragrance. Italy, Spain, and France are large consumer markets for cut flowers in southern Europe. Italy imports around 200 million cut flowers every year. Holland, Thailand, and Ecuador are big sources for the Italian flower market. However, the United States imports of fresh-cut flowers decreased by 6.40% from US$ 1.14 billion to US$ 1.07 billion through the first ten months of 2020. In most countries, cut flowers are a local crop due to their perishable nature.

The most common packaging formats are metal stand, bags, wrapping sheets, boxes & cartons, and sleeves. Moreover, the importance of Packaging of cut flowers is more important today as the consumers are very conscious about the product they purchase. The packaging of cut flowers must be attractive and appealing at the same time. Modified atmosphere packaging is used to conserve flower spikes and increase its shelf life. In modified atmosphere packaging, gas mixtures of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen are used in appropriate proportions. However, the method of packing depends on crop, flower, method of transport, and market.
