In the field of drilling services, directional drilling is the practice adopted for drilling non-vertical wells. It is mainly used in oilfield directional drilling, directional boring, utility installation directional drilling, and surface in seam (SIS). There are numerous benefits of directional drilling such as it increases the exposed section length through the reservoir at an angle, it allows more wellheads to be grouped together, etc. Drilling can be used both inside and outside of a well. For example, if the well has an exit face that is difficult to reach, a hole bored into the face can force the flow of the casing or the discharge of drilling fluid into another direction. A similar method can be used when a trapped air or gas bubble requires re-caulking.

Directional drilling solutions & services can also occur within a well. In this case, horizontal movement can cause the flow of drilling fluids into an undesirable line. For instance, a small fracture in an impervious material such as thin rock, an underground reservoir, or a thin formation can occur at a point where a horizontal directional drill would be ineffective. In order to identify these formations and their likely location, a horizontal line must be traced. A horizontal line will often intersect with previously unknown fractures or formations; in some cases, it will intersect with unknown permeability factors.

Horizontal directional drilling can take place using the same technologies that have been used for a horizontal good drilling. When using hydraulic fracturing, the natural gas or oil being sought will be pumped into a horizontal well that is deep enough to penetrate the earth's surface. A thin metal or plastic pipe will be inserted into the hole and connected to a flexible gas hose. Many countries such as the U.S., Italy, and Singapore have witnessed a massive surge in directional drilling solutions & services in the recent past. Recently, a U.S.-based company entered into a US$ 200 million contract with an Abu Dhabi company for directional drilling.
