Emergence of Covid-19 and Increasing Focus on Health to Boost Demand for Self-Care Medical Devices Worldwide

Self-care medical devices help in enhancement in the disease prevention and better patient compliance. The emergence of Covid-19 is expected to boost demand for self-care medical products worldwide.

In the U.S., manufacturers of these products have to go through several FDA classifications to ensure the products are safe for the users. These classifications are divided between devices that can cure and those that do not. Several devices fall in this category such as decongestants, nasal sprays, throat lozenges and other such devices. The classification rules are implemented to regulate the sale of the self-care products and to ensure the devices conform to the required standards.

In Europe, the adoption of self-care medical devices is however, limited due to poor health literacy. According to the study, ‘The Health-Economic Benefits of Self-care in Europe’ published in December 2020, 80% of Europeans accept that it is their responsibility to manage their own health and are willing to do so but only 2 in 10 feel very confident in managing their own health.

Nasal sprays are among the most common self-care medical devices, which serve the dual purpose of infection removal as well as the prevention of irritants from entering the nose. The latest innovation of the snoring spray makes it more powerful than ever and ensures complete solution to the problem of snoring. It emits a cloud of mist which forces the person to breathe through his nose making him sleep naturally and comfortably. While some nasal sprays claim complete cure from snoring problems, others use only positive measures and are completely safe to use.

Another device in this self-care category is the nasal drops. The nasal drops claim to relieve the congestion by moistening the airways and clearing the sinuses. The nasal drops act as a humidifier and thus humidify the air surrounding the nose reducing chances of infections. The saline solution used in nasal sprays also acts as a humidifier thus making breathing easier. All these methods help reduce congestion and mucus production and thus offer relief from snoring problems. Other devices are made as alarms for snorers. The snorer may often set off the alarm when he feels himself getting congested or when he hears a throaty noise. Thus the device starts to function even without a prompt from the user. This device has gained good response and people are using it for all kinds of respiratory conditions.

Other devices are meant to correct the posture and movement of the body. These devices are very popular and have their own following. Some are meant to help the person walk with a straight spine and avoid backaches while others help keep the back straight to avoid pain. Back braces are another device that helps you stand erect without straining your back muscles. These devices are found in spas and even gyms. One of the newest devices is a device called a chair that holds your jaw up while you sleep. It is very useful for those who think they snore but don't dare to take a nap because of the sound that they make. This device keeps the head in an elevated position thereby blocking the sound.
