High demand for dietary supplements that are natural based is augmenting demand for botanical supplements

Natural products are becoming popular because of several reasons but, one such reason is the ever-increasing demand for natural ingredients. These ingredients prove to be more effective in comparison to synthetic ones. With the increase in popularity of these supplements, manufacturers are also looking out for ways to make these products reach the consumers in the easiest way possible.

Some of the common factors that are driving demand for botanical supplements are the growing prevalence of nutritional deficiencies like vitamin or mineral deficiencies, infections, allergies, or genetic disorders. Because botanicals have antibiotic, antiviral anti-inflammatory, and other health benefits, they are being used in the treatment of these conditions. This is why, botanical dietary supplements like Echinacea, for example, are used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Botanical dietary supplements contain numerous chemical constituents, of which most are herbaceous. However, the majority of the ingredients used in these preparations are carbohydrates (mostly in the form of starches), proteins (mostly collagen), and sometimes minerals, such as zinc and iron. There are two main approaches to the quality assessment of botanical components. The sale of botanical supplements are increasing day by day due to growing awareness regarding the health benefits of natural ingredients and growing burden of various chronic disease in the region.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, dietary supplements must provide enough clinical data to establish that the claims made by the manufacturers are supported by scientific evidence. According to the US FDA, dietary supplements should not contain drugs, synthetic substances, estrogen agents, antineoplastic agents, antifungal agents, organ toxins, cell culture toxins, antibiotic chemicals, allergens, insecticides, hormone regulators, stabilizers, tannic acid, phenytoinoids, resveratrol, urea, saccharin, urea, glycoside, heparin, creatines, glycyrrhizin, taurocycle, and other foreign drugs or allergens.
