How Different types Ocular Drug Delivery Technology is Helping Patients with Various Ophthalmic Surgeries?

Topical eye drop remains the most convenient and patient-friendly route of drug delivery. This type of drug administration proves extremely crucial in the treatment of anterior segment diseases. In the recent past, some new methods of drug delivery have emerged including ocular insert, liposome bioadhesive gels, iontophoresis, contact lenses, etc. These methods have been developed to overcome challenges related to static as well as dynamic barriers. One of the major challenges related to oculardrug delivery technology is to obtain and maintain a therapeutic level at the site of action for an extended period of time.

A huge part of drug delivery is the speed at which it can take place. This is especially important for those who deal in very complex and sensitive formulations and who have to ensure that the drug is released into the body before the required time. For this reason, there are many tools and systems that are putting in place to aid in the speed of the process and to make it more efficient. The need for novel ocular drug delivery technology has increased due to rising cases of glaucoma and temporary blindness. Glaucoma cases are expected to increase with an increase in the population of the elderly in developed countries. This condition occurs when pressure builds up inside of the eye leading to damage and eventually blindness. Ocular insert refers to perpetration with solid or semisolid consistency whose shapes and size are designed specifically for ophthalmic application.

The ocular insert technology has various advantages including this technology reduces contact time & hence improves bioavailability, it reduces systematic side-effects along with systematic absorption. However, this technology has certain disadvantages including it brings interference with vision, occasional inadvertent loss during sleep or while rubbing eyes, etc. Key industry players in the U.S., Italy, and the U.K. have been focused on developing novel ocular drug delivery technology, in order to make eye surgeries far more efficient and less invasive. Many industry players have indeed developed novel technologies with the inclusion of a laser.
