How Laser Indirect Ophthalmoscope is Enabling Ophthalmologists Get Enhanced Access to the Retinal Periphery?

Ophthalmoscopy or also referred to as funduscopy is a test that enables a health professional to see inside the fundus of the eye and other structures with the help of an ophthalmoscope. Ophthalmoscopy is typically done as a part of routine eye checkups and is used to detect and evaluate symptoms of various retinal vascular diseases or eye diseases including glaucoma. Laser indirect ophthalmoscope, also known as laser eye surgery for the correction of myopia or hyperopia, is a simple corrective laser procedure that enables a change in the focus from near to far and improves the patient's vision.

Laser eye surgery has many benefits that can improve vision. These benefits can be used for various medical and rehabilitation uses and are also used to correct certain vision problems. Laser indirect ophthalmoscope is generally a soft corrective surgical procedure. This method is called photocoagulation or fundus enhancement. The photocoagulation procedure works by using a mild carbon dioxide laser beam to flatten the top layer of a patient's cornea, in effect removing the top layer of the dry epithelial cells (that form the outermost layer of the cornea). This flattening of the cornea enables a larger than a normal laser to be used for the excimer laser and the result is the same, the LASIK laser enables the farsighted or nearsighted condition to be corrected.

Currently, three types of Lasik are available namely excimer laser delivery, trinocular direct, and trinocular indirect. The excimer laser delivery system uses the excimer laser in its ablation chamber, while the trinocular direct delivery system uses the trinocular indirect laser delivery system. Many countries including Germany, Japan, and Mexico have witnessed an increased use of laser indirect ophthalmoscope over the years with the advent of advanced devices. For instance, recently a Germany-based medical diagnostic instruments provider introduced a unique synchronized optical system that offers stereoscopic viewing in a range of pupil sizes.
