Occurrence of Preterm Delivery Increase the Demand for Neonatal Thermoregulation Devices

Thermoregulation is the ability to balance heat production and heat loss to maintain body temperature within a certain normal range. Neonatal thermoregulation devices are used to warm and cool infants during labor.

Neonatal thermoregulation has gained much popularity among parents as it allows their child to be kept warm during the critical early weeks of their development, while also remaining cool throughout the process. The biggest contributing factor behind the growth of these neonatal thermoregulation devices is the rise in occurrence of preterm delivery, which leads to low body temperature, immediately after birth, due to a scarcity of stored body fat for the newborn.

The need for continuous heating or cooling of the baby, during this critical period, led to the birth of the neonatal thermoregulation device, a special device designed for keeping the child warm, even during the preterm period. This has increased their demand among various parents who are looking for an alternative other than the traditional. Around 380,000 babies are born prematurely every year in the United States. The preterm birth rate is 9.8% in the U.S. This means that one in every ten babies born in the U.S. will be born prematurely. Whereas, around 60,000 babies are born prematurely every year in the United Kingdom.

This means one in 13 babies born in the U.K. will be born premature (before 37 weeks of pregnancy). However, not all of these infants need to be cared for in a neonatal unit. Around 15 million babies are born preterm worldwide, and it contributes to an estimated one million neonatal (newborn) deaths annually and is an important contributor to childhood morbidity. Moreover, babies born between 30 and 32 weeks, still considered preterm, have at least a 99% chance of survival and are at very low risk of later health and developmental complications. However, to date, several techniques have been used to assess thermoregulation in infants and provide a thermo-neutral environment to maintain body temperature in newborns.
