Polydextrose Acts as A Sugar Substitute and Reduces Calorie Content in Food
Polydextrose is made up of carbohydrates and dextrose that form a polymer. It is made from naturally occurring components. Polydextrose is responsible for restriction in digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract due to the complex linkage distribution in its branched structure. Polydextrose is taken by mouth for diabetes, prediabetes, and constipation. It is safe when taken by mouth in doses of less than 50 grams per day and is unsafe when taken by mouth in doses of more than 50 grams or daily doses of more than 90 grams. It may cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, and intestinal gas (flatulence). It is also used as a prebiotic. Polydextrose is a food ingredient considered as a synthetic polymer of glucose.
The United States Food and Drug Association and Health Canada classified polydextrose as a soluble fiber in 2013 as a food ingredient. The pressure to make products healthier is constantly increasing, making it the right time to improve food and drink. Countries in Latin America have focused their attention on health, such as warning labels in Chile and sugar taxes in Mexico. In Japan, polydextrose is approved by the government as a safe food ingredient and is used in health drinks, processed foods, and in other applications.
Furthermore, in the European Union, polydextrose is approved under the Food Additives Regulation, permitting the use of polydextrose in virtually all foodstuffs. Polydextrose helps increase the non-dietary fiber content and reduce the calorie content of the food. Moreover, polydextrose has high solubility and rheological properties similar to sucrose which shows high versatility. Taste and texture play an important role among consumers and they are particularly attracted to healthy beverage products. Such ingredients add desirable texture to liquids such as dressings, sauces, and dairy drinks, yogurt, reduces sugar and calorie content. Moreover, polydextrose is added to foods that require bulking agents or foods that contain high amounts of fat and sugar.
