Thin Wall Packaging is an Integral Part of The Food and Beverage Industry
The demand for plastic parts and plastic packaging that are lightweight and engineered for better strength using less plastic materials has made thin wall packaging popular. Thin wall is considered as plastic packaging or plastics parts with a wall thickness less than 0.031 inches (0.8 mm). Thin wall packaging is used to protect goods/products from contamination from the human touch and environment. It also protects the contents inside the package from physical damage. The demand for thin wall packaging is highly driven by different contributing factors, including the ever-increasing demand from the food and beverage industry, the rise in urban population, change in eating habits, and a rise in disposable income.
Moreover, the increased use of packaging tapes and gels and the use of customized solutions in various industries has also led to the increasing use of this packaging in the food industry. The 14th edition of Thin Wall Packaging took place in December 2019 in Germany. The conference focus was on plastics packaging tubs, cups, trays, jars, and pots. While, in 2017, an injection mold manufacturer showcased the first-ever use of ultra-thin TRIM (Thin Recess Injection Molding) technology for single-serve applications at Expo Plasticos in Mexico.
Furthermore, the Japanese government developed a strategy for plastics and laid out ambitious targets including the reduction of 25% for single-use plastic waste and the reuse/recycling of 60% for plastic containers and packaging by 2030. Thin wall packaging applications include yogurt cups, dairy containers, packaging of juices, soups, and meats, frozen foods packaging, ready meal packaging, bakery packaging, fruit and vegetable packaging, and much more. It is also being used to replace glass and cans for applications such as meats and preserves because of the low packaging weight and a wide range of packaging design opportunities. Packaging plays an important role in the growth of any product-based business, as it provides security, convenience, information transmission, and protection.
