Emergence of Covid-19 and Various Advantages of Digital Radiology over Traditional X-ray Technology to Boost Demand for Digital Mobile X-Ray Devices

 

Digital mobile x-ray devices are a new technology that have rapidly increased in popularity over the past ten years. This devices allow radiographers to take extremely high quality, professional-looking images from the comfort of the operating room and deliver them quickly to a wide range of users, including emergency medical staff.

Today's digital mobile x-ray devices provide emergency medical staff the ability to instantly assess a patient's condition and provide treatment from the comfort of a busy hospital or medical practice. Moreover, with the emergence of Covid-19, the importance of these devices has further amplified. For instance, in April 2020, Carestream Health, a medical imaging company based in the U.S., announced that the company has increased production of its portable diagnostic imaging systems including DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System and DRX-Revolution Nano Mobile X-ray System in response to the novel COVID-19 pandemic.


 

Portable digital x-ray (PXR) systems are ideal for busy hospital emergency departments and urgent care centers. Although digital mobile radiography systems have been available in Europe for more than ten years, they are just becoming popular in the United States. Portable PXR systems can save medical staff time and money by providing high quality images in real time.

One of the main benefits of digital mobile x-ray devices over traditional X-ray technology is the speed of images. Because PXR can instantly provide a report on the condition of a patient, rather than waiting for the results of a paper X-ray report, radiographers can spend more time assessing a patient and making important decisions about treatment options. Other key benefits to digital imaging include:

  • Increases productivity - Most medical facilities experience a large increase in productivity once their PXR system is implemented. The increased productivity is due in part to the increased image quality, but is also due to the decreased time required to obtain digital images when there is congestion in the imaging room.

  • Increases patient satisfaction - patients experience a higher level of patient satisfaction when radiologists are able to immediately assess their health and deliver informed treatment options.

  • Reduces patient injury - digital mobile radiography equipment helps to reduce the risk of injury to patients during examinations. This can be particularly important for emergency departments as many accidents occur during PXR procedures.

  • Increases productivity by improving image quality - Many radiographers report that the quality of their images from digital mobile radiography units greatly improves over the older analog imaging process. When you have a PXR system at your medical facility, you have access to a variety of imaging methods such as Computed Tomography (CT), Computed Tomography (CT scanner) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). When compared to older imaging techniques, digital mobile radiography provides superior image quality and greatly reduces time wasted on unnecessary scans. In addition, because digital mobile radiography units can be easily accessed and quickly retrieved, patients are able to get an accurate diagnosis right away.

  • Increases safety - Even though the traditional X-ray machine is often used for chest imaging, digital imaging offers additional safety features that help to improve its utility and efficiency. For instance, PXR systems use digital luminescence radiology cameras that retain light for up to an hour after being exposed to radiation. This additional safety feature helps prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation. In addition, digital luminescence radiography units allow for non-disposing imaging, meaning that images can be disposed of without affecting the patient. This greatly decreases the amount of waste, thereby reducing costs and improving quality.
