Emergence of Novel Coronavirus and High Prevalence of HIV/AIDS to Boost Demand for Plasma Therapy

Plasma therapy is a medical procedure that uses the blood of a recovered patient to create antibodies on those infected individuals. It can be used as a primary treatment for some viral diseases like herpes simplex virus and HIV/AIDS. It may also be used in the treatment of cancer, bone marrow stem cell transplantation and head trauma. It can also be given as a secondary treatment after receiving a transplanted blood product.

Emergence of Covid-19 has led to significant adoption of the convalescent plasma therapy. For instance, in December 2020, U.S.-based Sigyn Therapeutics, Inc. announced the completion of an in vitro study that demonstrated the ability of Sigyn Therapy to clear both endotoxin and inflammatory cytokines from human blood plasma.

There are two types of convalescent plasma therapy: primary and secondary. In primary therapy, antibodies are harvested from the patient's own blood and then introduced into a non-allergic individual. Anti-antibodies are made to target the antibodies that are produced by the human immune system to fight infection. These antibodies help in stimulating the immune system so that it can perform its natural function of fighting infection. This is why antibodies are referred to as the 'helpers' of the immune system in the body.

Secondary plasma therapy involves the use of supplements that are manufactured specifically for patients with an impaired immune system. They are made to stimulate the immune system naturally in the body. When such a supplement is used, the antibodies used in primary therapy are not needed to be produced. However, it should be remembered that antibodies cannot stop all the infections and diseases from plaguing the body. Hence, there would still be need for people with an impaired immune system to take medicines in addition to plasma therapy to keep up with the body's defenses against different illnesses.
