Growing number of cosmetic surgeries to significantly raise the demand for skin replacement

Skin replacement simply means the repositioning of injured healthy skin tissues on the human body's surface, not tissue transplantation. Many cosmetic products are sold as skin replacements. The most popular products used to restore lost skin tissues are subcutaneous fat grafts, dermal fillers, synthetic collagen, and artificial fat tissue.

These products also promote wound closure with silicone or saline adhesive. Adhesive supports the wound bed and helps prevent bacterial growth. These biological skin substitutes, however, cannot be used in conjunction with autologous fat transfers. Instead, they should be used in conjunction with traditional sutures.

The key difference between these two types of tissue transfers is the biological makeup of the artificial skin grafts. Cultured skin grafts are created from adult human epidermis obtained from any part of the body and are then processed to form strands of viable, elastic tissue that can easily be woven into customized patches or slabs. Unlike biological skin grafts derived from other parts of the body, dermis grown skin replacements derived from other areas of the body are custom-made to match the natural thickness and texture of the patient's own skin. This is crucial in ensuring that these skin replacements will have a lifelong effect upon the patient. A skin graft is typically comprised of a blend of all-natural human tissues, including the epidermis, connective tissue, muscle, and fascia.

Xenografts are comprised of living human hairs. These hair strands are harvested from areas of the head not covered by facial hair, such as the temples, cheeks, or even the eyelashes. Next, the hair is securely woven into a durable, comfortable dressing that can be used to dress wounds, regrow lost hair, or cover scars or burn marks. Xenografts may also be used in conjunction with other allografts in the treatment of multiple injuries or ailments.
