Vitamin E-Infused Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene Technologies Find Application in Improving the Survivorship and Stability of Implants
Cross-linked polyethylene, also known as PEX, XLPE or XPE, is a special type of polyethylene made from cross-linking polymer that can be bonded or pressed together at low temperatures, using heat to make it more malleable. It's most common use is in building materials, plumbing, gas and oil piping, insulation for heavy-gauge electrical cables and water heating systems.
The polymers that make up PEX are called "Polypropylene"Polyisoprene." The cross-linking of the polymer molecules helps them form a strong bond when they're put together at high temperatures. PEX has many different uses, but the most popular among builders is in piping for plumbing systems, including plumbing fixtures like faucets, drains and showers. It can also be used in making water heater valves and lines, faucet pipes and joints, and drainage pipes for stormwater drains.
Cross-linked polyethylene also has many other uses as well, including making pipe insulation, seals and adhesives for air conditioners, refrigerators and water heaters, and roofing materials. It's used to make the pipes that connect heating and air conditioning units to the rest of the house, as well as the ductwork between them. PEX pipes can also be used as a liner in place of Plexiglass to make an insulating layer on windows and doors, to block out cold air and warm sun-drenched air. The liner can also be used to cover vent pipes and to prevent moisture from building up on the interior of the house. This way, it acts as a "double layer" insulation, keeping the temperature and moisture level of the home in check.
In the healthcare sector, vitamin E-infused highly crosslinked polyethylene technologies find application in improving the survivorship and stability of implants. This has led several manufacturers to use PEX. In July 2020, Paragon 28 Inc., a company dedicated to creating tailored solutions and tools to improve the treatment of foot and ankle conditions, received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for its APEX 3D total ankle replacement technology. The system includes porous 3Dprinted implants and vitamin E-infused highly crosslinked polyethylene technologies to increase implant survivorship and stability.
Because PEX pipes are strong enough to withstand high heat loads, and can even be treated to resist fire and smoke, they're often used in commercial buildings such as hotels and restaurants, where high temperatures can lead to problems with fire damage and/or health risks. Cross-linking polymer also makes for a strong bond between hot and cold pipes, so that pipes that need a higher temperature connection are more insulated, allowing water and electric pipes to stay cool under a variety of different conditions.
Cross-linked poly vinyl can be found in a wide range of different colors and thicknesses, so that it's easy to match pipes to their surroundings, whether they're in a home or a commercial environment. Because this type of pipe can be formed into any shape imaginable, it's great for piping through corners or in corners of the house, so that pipe outlets are never blocked again.
