Disposable Insulin Pen; an Alternative to Vial and Syringe for Insulin Administration

Disposable insulin pen is a medical device that makes it easier and more convenient to inject insulin than using a syringe. Insulin is an important compound for the management of diabetes, especially for type 2 diabetes. The introduction of the insulin pen was a milestone in insulin delivery. The first insulin pen was launched in 1985. Compared to syringes and vials, insulin pens offer significant advantages. Insulin pens are of two types, such as disposable insulin pen and reusable insulin pen.

Disposable insulin pens have a prefilled cartridge and are discarded when the cartridge is empty. While, reusable insulin pens allow the patient to replace the cartridge when empty. The major reasons that the disposable insulin pen has been seen as such a promising choice by many, are the growing diabetes population, rising geriatric population, and increasing obese population. According to the International Diabetes Federation, in 2019, around 463 million adults were living with diabetes, and this number is expected to reach 700 million by 2045.

Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. According to the CDC’s National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2020, cases of diabetes have risen to an estimated 34.2 million. Insulin pens are now in use by diabetic patients worldwide, however, there are geographical variations in the use of these pens. In some parts of the world, syringes and vials are by far the most popular method, while in other parts the use of insulin pens is more common.

The variation in usage is due to many factors including physician/patient preference and awareness, patient access to insulin, and cost. The use of insulin in inpatient is very common, and the use of insulin pens offers substantial benefits in this type of patients, both during the admission period and after discharge from the hospital. Both reusable and disposable insulin pens have become extremely popular throughout the world; in some countries, 70% to 90% of all insulin is delivered by insulin pens.
