Single-use Gastrointestinal Devices Increase Patient Safety and Prevent Gastrointestinal Infections

Gastroenterology is an integral part of medical science dealing with the stomach, esophagus, and intestines. Gastroenterologists provide a broad range of services to patients with chronic ailments that involve these three organs. In most cases, they are called upon to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the stomach, esophagus, and intestines. They are also called upon to make recommendations for improving the health of patients who suffer from such conditions. Various gastrointestinal devices used by gastroenterologists include, gastroscope, duodenoscope, enteroscope, colonoscope, flexible sigmoidoscope, rigid sigmoidoscope, and ultrasound endoscope.

Gastrointestinal Devices
 Gastroscope

It is a gastrointestinal device used to perform esophagogastroduodenoscopy in the detection and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The gastroscope helps the doctor to find the pathology of IBS by locating the small intestine where it passes through the colon. A gastroscope also allows the doctor to see the colon and to determine whether or not IBS is caused by the presence of abnormal material inside the colon. Other applications of a gastroscope are in the diagnosis of peptic ulcers, the detection and treatment of intestinal infections, and the detection and treatment of colon cancer.

Duodenoscope

It is a gastrointestinal device used to perform ERCP. It is used for the inspection of the upper esophagus. The device comes equipped with many small clear plastic tubes with very small clear light bulbs along with a wand to move them around inside of the esophagus. The wand comes equipped with many small buttons that allow the doctor to tilt the wand in various directions to view any potential abnormalities that may exist. A thin, narrow band is then attached across the esophagus to help guide its passage throughout the body. Using this equipment also helps to clear out the pockets and tubes that could potentially be causing complications during the process of intubation and esophageal intubations. By using both of these instruments, doctors can help prevent scarring, blockages, and other potentially dangerous complications in patients who have undergone either medical procedure. The market is witnessing launch of single-use duodenoscopes. It is not required to balance the necessity of the procedure against the risk of infection from a reusable endoscope. Use of single-use duodenoscopes also increases patient safety and prevents infections

Enteroscope

It is a gastrointestinal device used to perform push enteroscopy. It is often used to treat patients who are experiencing abdominal pain. The process does not require more than two visits, which means that you can go back to work soon after your surgery. A traditional "double-balloon" gastroscope, which is named because of its shape (like a basketball), is much more invasive and expensive.

Colonoscope

It is a gastrointestinal device used to perform colonoscopy. The most advanced type of colonoscope, a laparoscopic small intestineenteroscope, is now being used less frequently. This is because the technology is improving, making it easier and less painful for doctors to use. In particular, a laparoscopic gastroscope can be used to test patients for Crohn's disease by inserting a very thin, lighted tube into the small intestine, or biopsy. If a cancer or other problem is found, a doctor may decide to remove a piece of tissue from the affected area. If the patient undergoes a normal colonoscopy, then he or she will have the opportunity to choose between a "push enteroscope" or a "standard" endoscopy.
