An electronic lab notebook is simply a computerized program designed to copy paper lab notebooks. Paper laboratory notebooks by nature are used primarily by professionals, researchers, and engineers to record various laboratory procedures, experiments, and research done in a lab. Some people prefer to use the paper ones in their own personal laboratory or offices. While the paper ones are more common, there are also electronic notebooks which are much more popular. Paper notebooks are generally the cheapest as well as most durable of all the types. However, these are not necessarily very easy to maintain.

For instance, there are notebooks designed specifically for the medical field. These are designed to contain all of the necessary information and keep track of all of the important patient information. Some electronic lab notebooks are designed specifically for students.
