Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) Offers Various Advantages Including Minimally Invasive Procedure and Low Recovery Time

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is used in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm, an enlargement of the aorta, the main blood vessel that delivers blood to the body, at the level of the abdomen. The procedure involves inserting a graft within the aneurysm through small groin incisions using X-rays to guide the graft into place.

High prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm boosts demand for Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in Europe. The hospital prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm was 27.9 and 3.3 cases per 100 000 people for men and women, respectively, in Germany during 2005-2014. The percentage of patients that received endovascular treatment increased from 29% in 2005 to 75% in 2014 in patients with unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Europe is witnessing significant R&D in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) as a result of high prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm. In February 2019, Affluent Medical, a France-based medtech startup, announced positive results for a randomized, controlled, multicentric clinical trial that assessed the efficacy of the company’s EVAR system device in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurism.

In Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), an endovascular stent graft is placed in an aortic aneurysm. A catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin. The catheter is threaded to the abdominal aorta, and the stent graft is released from the catheter. EVAR offers various advantages such as low recovery time. Its minimally invasive nature means it is done with a small cut (incision). EVAR significantly reduces perioperative mortality as the procedure does not require operative exposure of the aorta or aortic clamping.

There are some disadvantages of Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). The procedure may lead to permanent dialysis and lower survival rate in renal artery involvement. Such risks call for effective planning for conducting EVAR.
