Immuno-Oncology Drugs have revolutionized the way of treating cancer

Immuno-Oncology is a relatively new field of cancer research, focused on the immune system and its ability to fight various cancers. The immune system is our first line of defense against most types of illness. As a defense mechanism, it recognizes and destroys any foreign or potentially harmful substance or infection that invades our bodies. However, sometimes our immune system doesn't recognize what it's faced with and starts to attack healthy tissue instead. When this happens, it can cause many serious diseases, including cancer.


 

Immuno-Oncology drugs are used in the fight against cancer by strengthening the immune system so that it can better combat cancerous cells. These drugs inhibit cancerous tumor cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This is important because the immune system is like a defense mechanism in the body that will attempt to heal whatever damage has been done before deciding to kill off cancerous cells.

The latest drugs are being used to treat breast cancer, cervical cancer, head and neck cancer, kidney cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple myeloma, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, herpes simplex virus infection, and Lupus erythematosus (a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack its own tissues). Immuno-Oncology drugs aim to strengthen your body's defenses so that it can better fight against cancer. Cancer sufferers will normally go into remission after a period of treatment, however, if the cancer is in an advanced or severe state immuno-Oncology drugs may not be able to cure cancer. Immuno-Oncology drugs have also shown promise in treating other diseases such as leukemia and diabetes. They are now routinely being used instead of surgery. The latest cancer treatment called biological therapy combines drugs with biological approaches to treat various types of cancer.
