Minimally Invasive Nasopharyngeal Cancer Treatment Removes Small Nasopharyngeal Tumors through the Nasal Cavity

Nasopharyngeal cancer is uncommon in the U.S; it occurs far more often in other parts of the globe, especially Southeast Asia. Nasopharyngeal cancer is hard to detect at first, making it difficult to track and treat. That is probably because the nasal cavity is not easy to study and symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer often mimic those of many other, less threatening conditions. Nasopharyngeal cancer treatment usually involves radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of both. The cancer is not likely to spread to the lymph nodes in the neck or chest, but it can spread to the stomach and duodenum.

Endoscopic nasopharyngectomy is a minimally invasive nasopharyngeal cancer treatment. In endoscopic nasopharyngectomy, small nasopharyngeal tumors may be removed through the nasal cavity. If this surgery does not work, another option is to use a type of radiotherapy called brachytherapy. Brachetherapy is similar to surgery; the difference is that no incisions are made and no part of the nasal cavity is cut. The radiation is then delivered by a machine through a tube that runs from the nose to the mouth. The radiation usually kills the cancerous cells in a few weeks, although it depends on the severity of the condition and the type of treatment used.

In cases of milder types of cancer, there are a variety of ways to attack the problem. Common options include trying to remove the cancerous cells from the nasal passages or trying to target them at other areas of the body. For instance, some doctors try to remove them from the nose by burning or cutting it off. However, some patients have had success with surgery to target the cancerous cells found in the nasal passage and using chemotherapy to fight the cancer cells in other areas of the body has also shown some success.
