There are many kinds of digital door lock systems available for homes and businesses. For instance, the different types of residential access control include keyless entry, fingerprint entry, card access control, and wireless access control. Keyless entry systems are quite popular with the younger generation because they use a cellular telephone to "guess" the user's password. These are becoming more popular, but there are downsides to them because if the phone is lost or stolen, one loses the ability to lock the doors!

The most common type of home or business access control is fingerprint entry, which involves the use of biometric data, including fingerprints (often taken from the users themselves), iris recognition, hand geometry, finger shape recognition, and facial recognition. This is the most secure type of access control, but it does have its disadvantages; fingerprints are oftentimes too hard to print out. Another problem is that fingerprints are oftentimes difficult for a would-be thief to write down, which means that they cannot easily pass a check. Because of this, and the fact that fingerprints are unique to each person, using a smart digital door lock system with a fingerprint entry system can be quite frustrating if the user wants to have complete control of the security in the home or business, but don't want to risk losing the security over a silly thumbprint problem.

Wireless home automation systems can provide another choice in security because they do not require a "guessing game" like fingerprint systems. Instead, with a wireless smart card reader, the user can log into the system, arm himself with a wireless pistol, and simply use the card to lock or unlock the doors and windows. In addition, there are door contacts, which can be used in conjunction with a smart digital door lock system to provide greater control, because the user can control which entries to arm or disarm with the wireless smart card.
